Hair Transplant surgery- 3rd day, yes, kind of important to mention

I got my hair transplant surgery done on 22nd November 2016. After I got all clear from the blood work, I have posted the results below.

Where did I get my Hair Transplant done?

IF you are wondering why I am now disclosing any information about the clinic I used. And I am cropping out those letterheads, do not worry I am going give you that information too.  I want to see the result of their work before I give a shout out to them.

from 22nd November – 25th Nov, I was supposed to keep the headband on. And I had few meds on, if you could scroll down, you can see the prescription of the meds I am taking or may be I was taking. Essentially, these are anti-acid , anti biotic, vitamin , pain killers etc.

After 3 days from Hair Transplant surgery

On 3rd day from hair transplant surgery, I had to take the headband off, it was covering the donor area. Yes I was scared to take it off, because it was hurting for first 2 days.

I had to wash my hair with mild shampoo for first time after surgery. Actually it was first head wash since surgery. Mom played the  role of nurse and she washed my head. You need to apply the shampoo all over head and leave it for 4 – 5 minutes. Then wash off with water, be gentle and use fingertips and not nails.

There was an ointment ( mentioned in prescription) that had to be applied on the donor area ( at back of my head).

And I had to start applying minoxidil, so I did. I mean of course my mom did all these, I just lent my head to work on.

Let me answer few questions –

Did it hurt during operation ? You will be loaded with anesthesia and pain meds. All you will feel that you are carry stone on your head, you wont feel much, first day.

Does the donor area hurt ? Yes it does, I had to take pain meds constantly for 2 days. And while I was trying to lay down, the donor area hurts due to pressure.

Did it hurt after / during taking head band off? Nothing significant

Does it hurt to shampoo ? I guess get a good nurse like I did, and it won’t hurt. On a serious note, you have to be really gentle.

Does the donor area hurt while applying ointment? Not really, you will be able to sense it though.

Does it hurt while applying minoxidil? Nope

Does it hurt when I try to lay down ? Little bit, but it is way better than before even without the head band.

For first 2 days after Hair Transplant surgery, I had to take prescribed meds and  apply saline water every 2 hours to keep the head moist.Hair Transplant surgery

Here are few more points before we conclude –

Personally I did not have any dietary restrictions, since I do not have any addictions ( alcohol, cocaine etc) , I do not have even drink coffee or tea, so I was good, otherwise you can’t smoke or drink for 3 weeks. And physical activity, gym etc for 3 weeks, after 3 weeks you may start mild to moderate physical activities.

One more thing, my forehead is swollen , may be from injections or the head band, it is getting better though, because I am writing this post on 4th day, next day after I took my head band off.Hair Transplant surgery

Hair Implants – The Day I got stabbed million times

That Tuesday 22nd November, I reached doctor’s office at 10.45 am. And I had to change by 11 am. I got needled with anesthesia – it was a test to check if I am allergic. And second needle poked my left arm – it was a tetanus. Painkillers came in form of dessert. I was all set for hair implants.

Before the hair implants surgery

Then I was taken inside the operation theater. And I was welcomed with a huge needle and syringe. The lady wanted to draw 20 ml blood , yes PRP treatment needs blood to be drawn. I saw 4 guys on table . 2 nurses and 1 lady who was there to draw my blood, man I was scared.

Next – I was taken to Doctor’s office to draw hairline. And they did a photo session, yeah my face might go up on their web site very soon. You know that “Before and After ” thing after hair implants.

Next came – trimming of hair. Before they could take skin out of back of my scalp, they had to shave that area.

Let us talk about the hair implant

After that I got millions of needles poked all over my head  , yes I was getting anesthesia. Okay, may be not million, but I think around 20 pokes.

I got skinned, They took strip of my scalp to extract the hair follicles for hair implants, I just realized, I did not mention this before, I went for FUT and PRP, not FUE, what I have heard, FUE is less painful.

After they peeled the skin off , 4 guys started working on picking those follicles, Man let me tell you one thing straight, if you want to figure out if they are going to plant 4000 follicles on your head, I do not think you can, with so many painkillers, anesthesia your brain will be fried. I felt pretty dizzy actually, So just trust the surgeon and his team.

The surgery is still on

They managed to get 4475 follicles from the strip, and I was asked if I would go for 4000 only or with all of them?  I just thought, I already do not have enough follicles. so it would not be wise to throw away few, so it costed me few more grands but I got all 4475 follicles planted in front .

I was given lunch in between :), almost forgot to mention that, surgery was over by 7.30 pm, so almost 8.30 hrs. Darn, I hate being on OT so much. Here is picture of my freshly ploughed head —

Best Hair Transplant surgeon – but how to find him?

Sunday early morning my flight touched my homeland. I was psyched for so many reasons, jet lag was not one of them. Monday, I went to see my doctor ( the surgeon who was going to drill tiny holes on my head and plant those hair follicles, also known as hair transplant surgeon), I had a 2 pm appointment, the consultation fee was 500 rs. I was called in side the chamber after waiting for 1 hr. It was not a long conversations, although I was trying to get the best hair transplant.

What do you need to know if you want best hair transplant ?

  1. I knew my budget
  2. of course, I knew the price ( he charged me 82 rs per follicle, please note follicle might contain 1 to 3 hairs)
  3. And I was going to get 4000 follicles, that is the most count surgeon could do in one day
  4. He suggested to implant follicles in front of the head and leaving the crown area.
    1. PEr him the top of the head including crown area contains 40000 follicles, I have like 10000 left, so he wanted to cover the front first
    2. He asked me what I use and for how long, I told my Rogaine and finasteride usage history
  5. We scheduled my surgery date on Tuesday, that was the next day 22 November 2016.
  6. We had to give them a check of 30000 rs to book the process
  7. And that was not all, it continued –

  8. We were charged additional 200rs for a shampoo and a hair band. And I was supposed to wash my hair with the shampoo that night and next day morning. That was the most expensive shampoo I have ever used in my life. Darn, now I remember they kept the used bottle also, I will give you the detail in next post.
  1. Almost forgot to mention, doc prescribed me few blood test. So my blood was drawn on same day. Blood work report was given to me same night. It costed me 1500 rs. But pls note, most of the recommended blood works were already done as part of my yearly check up.
  2. The receptionist called a person to draw the blood, who came in 10 mins. He was awesome , apart from the fact. He wanted 1600 rs for the prescribed tests, my dad negotiated and settled for 1500 rs.

Here are 2 pictures of the area, I was going to get transplant on. And all I wanted was the best hair transplant

Men hair restoration Questions Answered

Let’s talk men hair restoration, yes we are talking about hair transplant. But, before going in to that, we need to get answer to few basic questions.

My first question regarding men hair restoration was – does thing work? Is it permanent?

As I came to know, for hair transplant, the follicles are taken from back of your head. And these guys are supposed to be permanent, genetically resistant to DHT, good for people with hair problem 😛

Please bear in mind, non transplanted hair still can fall off. As those are genetically not immunized to hair fall 🙁 .( shame on you hair engineer up in somewhere, so disappointed in you)

Second –  How much does it cost?

It is expensive, so please shop around. There are cheaper options avalable overseas. But I will say you want a good quality for following reasons –

  1. I heard of people dying of anesthesia ( yea man, he went for a cheaper guy I assume)
  2. You hair is on stake ( forget about looks, and money) and we already do not have much left

So, just do not go for a surgeon because he is offering cheap pricing. You need to get enough information about his track record.

Third: Does it hurt ? Can I manage to go back to work next day?

Every video I watched who got this procedure done, nobody mentioned too much pain, may be you need 3 days break you can go back to work.

fourth – Who will be a good surgeon ? Should I get it done in USA or should I go to India?

Finding a good men hair restoration doc was the hardest part, I kept the budget thing aside, I wanted to find someone who has lot of experience and who takes care of his patience. If you are in States, I will say try to get reviews ( on yelp) or simply good the surgeons name, YouTube is a great place to find testimonial.

I found my men hair restoration surgeon on YouTube ( yea funny and risky, I know) , but I chose to get it done in India, since I was coming here for a vacation anyway and my parents live here, so I wanted them to get a chance to nurse me once again 😛

Fifth- I wanted to  know experience of other people , positive, negative and everything

while researching I came across bad experiences as well, such as people got swollen face , transplants falling off. And like I mentioned before, one guy died because anstesia was too much for him to handle.

So as you can imagine not everything was encouraging.

To tell you the truth, my surgeon first tested if I am allergic to the anesthesia they were going to put me on. Turned out I was okay with it , next came tetanus – man nothing happened. And turns out transplant fall off in a month naturally before they grow back, so no need to be panicked.

Balding Man – When did I decide to get Hair transplant?

Balding man

Yes, after using minoxidil ( this is the active active ingredient not a brand), to be specific “Rogain” ( yes the pricey one) is my favorite. Since it dose not give me dandruff. But I occasionally use Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo to keep my scalp cool, itch free to be specific.

Balding Man
Balding Man

Oh one more thing, I use rogain just one time each day, before going to bed. But the recommended dose is twice daily. I am a morning person and do not want to smell like alcohol when I go out. And I have mentioned before I did not take finasteride after 2011. But I did try some herbal supplements, such as “Saw Palmetto” , “Biotin” and “Ashwagandha”.

I was one sad balding man 🙁

To be honest, nothing brought my hair back. But probably they did a good job slowing down my hair loss process. I am a 85 born, and I did not like the way I looked. Looking myself at mirror made to sick to my stomach. And, yes, I have mirror phobia. Call me insecure, but I am just being honest, it is what it is without fabricating.

Balding man got an idea 🙂

I decided of getting Hair Transplant, and yes, I had millions of questions, millions of doubts, lot of money to spend, I did not know where to get it, how to handle it. It was a grey area for me.

My first question was – does thing work? Is it permanent?

second –  How much does it cost?

Third: Does it hurt ? Can I manage to go back to work next day?

fourth – Who will be a good surgeon ? Should I get it done in USA or should I go to India?

Fifth- I wanted to  know experience of other people , positive, negative and everything

Thin Out Hair – My journey from going thick to thin out hair

swear in the name of God of Baldness/solemnly affirm that what I shall state shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Thin Out Hair – full head of hair is a thing of past for me

Today, I am 31, I believe I was still in my engineering college when my buddy pointed out bald spot on my crown. And, I did exactly what any other stupid kid would have done – I chose to ignore.

Fast forward few years, in the year 2008. When I was busting my hump at work, I remember my coworkers / teammates suddenly turning into fortune teller and predicting that I will go bald in one year. One guy was completely bald among them. So I could not ignore an experienced persons insight. And another guy was of my age, he actually complimented me that I do a commendable job hiding my bald spots with my thinning hair. I was not so sure it was a compliment, because it burnt me a bit , somewhere inside 🙁

There is none other than my parents I trust more on this planet. Whenever I asked them, they always consoled me saying it is not bad. After being complimented at work, I decided to check my crown area myself. I used 2 mirrors, you know how they do it in salon. what I saw, made me panic . And  I was not happy with my parents. I always prefer the bitter truth over anything. And I strongly believe one need to know and acknowledge the problem to address it. First I yelled at my parents. It is just my frustration that came out. And I was 23 years old, who just found out that his crown looks like 63 years old. How else do you think I was gonna react? Giving up is not in my DNA, keep reading.

Thin out hair – my desperate fight against hair fall

Next step, I decided to see my favorite dermatologist. At age of 31 I am not docile about him, so I will be precise without ranting. He was ( or may be he is) pretty decent dermatologist. When I had some fungal infection on my scalp, I went to see him. And his prescription of anti fungal cream and shampoo, pretty much healed me. But he prescribed mintop, that is minoxidil for 6 months, that generic minoxidil gave me terrible dandruff and caused me monthly doctor visit just to get more mintop prescribed and anti dandruff shampoo to fight the dandruff. I stopped it for a while, I do not recall for how long, may be for more that a year or so.

It was all good until the year 2008, when I was shocked after seeing my own crown, so I decided to see the doc again, and I got prescription for more generic minoxidil, finasteride ( yes the one with deadly side effect) and some anti dandruff shampoo, my hair started coming back, I was using all these till year 2011 , my hair was doing well, suddenly my dad found out about the side effects of long term use of finasteride, god knows from where, so eventually I stopped taking that and I switched to herbal alternative from himalaya, and let me tell you things went south with heavy dandruff.

Eventually I came back to minoxidil and anti dandruff shampoo. My scalp being dry, the alcohol in minoxidil always made my dandruff horrible. Scalp becomes itchy and red. After I moved to USA, I got rogain, this is the most expensive breed. But it never gives me dandruff or any itchy scalp. Unfortunately it is so expensive that I often switched to generic brands of  minoxidil. And I had to fight with dandruff with neutrogena anti dandruff shampoo.

Let’s sum it up quickly:

This is my story summed up from 2008 – 2016 November, man it was not a good one. To be honest I hated seeing myself in mirror. I was running away from all cameras. And I was sick of people commenting on my thin hair. Yeah, if you are going through the same, I feel you. I want you to know I am sharing this just to let you know that please do not feel bad. I really hope your hair comes back. And I am going to tell you next, what I did to bring them back.

Here are few disclosures :
